Careers & VET

Our College aims to provide all our students with the latest information that will help them make decisions about their future career and life beyond school.

Providing careers guidance is becoming an increasingly complex and specialised field. Students have access to the careers curriculum delivered within our SWEAP program throughout the year and can access our trained careers team at any time during the school day.

We have a well-resourced Careers office located in the Library Resource Centre, where we use technology combine with face-to-face contact to inform, prepare, explore and challenge students in preparation for a rewarding study or work life.

Careers and Pathway services provided by the College include:

  • Career counselling
  • Career education and planning
  • Resume and cover letter preparation
  • Coordinating work education, school-based apprenticeship, work placement and work experience
  • Course counselling and subject selection advice
  • University/TAFE course information
  • VET subject information
  • Support for ‘at risk’ or disengaged students
  • Transition support for students exiting the College or upon completion of Year 12
  • Career expos, excursions, trade taster experiences

WSC is working with all students to create a Personalised Learning Plan, to ensure that all students have a current and realistic Careers Plan. Regardless of age, any student and their parent may make an individual appointment with our careers team if they require further assistance.

Vocational education and training (VET)

Vocational education and training (VET) is learning where you develop targeted and practical skills related to a career pathway, so you can apply them at work or into further education and training.
You can add a VET course to your VCE or VCEVM program, or you can start VET in year 10, accelerating your senior school program. You must be 15 to start a VET course, and most VET courses completing at school run over two years. Students attend their VET course one day a week, or on some occasions the VET course runs within the school program.
VET courses provide a nationally recognised qualification in a specific industry or provide credit towards a certificate. VET courses contribute towards the completion of your VCE or VCEVM. Depending on which VET courses you choose will depend whether it is a scored course or whether it provides 10% towards your ATAR.

Whittlesea Secondary College is proud to provide a variety of VET courses to both internal and external students. Incorporating the use of our Trade Training Centre, we offer the following VET courses:

EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL STUDENTS

  • Certificate III in Allied Health
  • Certificate II in Automotive
  • Certificate II in Building and Construction
  • Certificate II in Engineering

INTERNAL SUDENTS

  • Certificate III in Cookery
  • Certificate III in Information Technology
  • Certificate III in Sport and Recreation

Whittlesea Secondary College is a part of two VET clusters – Lower Hume VET Cluster and Northern Melbourne VET Cluster. Our students can access more VET courses through these VET clusters, going offsite one day at week to other schools and/or TAFE providers.
