Combining Design and Art

Visual Communication Design- Year 9

Keith Haring was an influential artist of the 1980’s who focused on making his art accessible to the public by creating street art and often placing his works on clothing. His artwork frequently addressed social issues of the time, some that are still relevant to this day. By studying this artist, students are seeing the connection between art and design.

Students initially complete a small research project on Keith Haring, followed by thinking of a social issue that they could represent in a poster. This poster is completed using paint, a medium typically associated with art. Typical mediums of design are pencils and computer software.

The task highlights issues that students feel strongly about, representing their position on said issue visually. Some of the issues students represented were same sex equality, domestic violence, bullying, anxiety and the Trump campaign
